IDR Commercial Construction Management has partnered with Burquitlam Funeral Home for many years, delivering complex tenant improvement projects that reflect not only technical expertise but also a commitment to long-term client relationships. From renovations to complete design-build relocations, our partnership showcases the value of Construction Management grounded in trust, transparency, and problem-solving.
A Relationship Built on Results
The partnership with Burquitlam Funeral Home dates back to 2005, when Glenn McLoughlin, now IDR’s Director of Business Development, worked with another firm to deliver a renovation of their North Road facility. That project, which involved 2,500 square feet of active office space, required careful phasing and sequencing to keep daily operations running smoothly. The success of that initial collaboration established a trusted relationship that would carry forward for nearly two decades.
When Burquitlam Funeral Home expanded its operations in 2019 and again in 2021, they turned once more to Glenn—now with IDR—to lead the two major tenant improvement projects. These later undertakings brought a new level of complexity, with IDR providing complete design-build services, from managing design teams and securing permits to coordinating renovations and delivering client-ready spaces.
Design-Build Approach for Relocation and Expansion
The 2019 and 2021 projects involved the relocation and subsequent expansion of Burquitlam’s operations. IDR led the whole design-build process, guiding the projects from concept development through to occupancy. This work required managing a multidisciplinary design team and navigating development and zoning challenges that added layers of complexity to the planning phase.
Beyond design and approvals, IDR also secured building and street use permits in high-traffic areas, ensuring construction activities could proceed without unnecessary disruption to the project and the business. The team coordinated demolition crews, electrical contractors, and structural trades, all while keeping the schedule and budget on track. Delivering functional, client-ready spaces on time and within budget demanded strong stakeholder coordination, technical problem-solving, and flexibility. These qualities defined the success of both projects.

Collaboration and Communication: The Cornerstones of Success
For Burquitlam Funeral Home, IDR’s professionalism and clear communication were defining factors in the success of both projects. The team ensured the client was well-prepared for key decisions, provided practical guidance on solutions and materials, and delivered accurate reporting that built trust at every stage.
Alongside this, IDR managed communication with City Hall staff, utility providers, consultants, and trade partners. By handling these complexities, the team allowed Burquitlam’s staff to remain focused on serving their community, confident that IDR addressed construction and permitting challenges with transparency and care.
Managing Challenges in Active Environments
Renovating and expanding funeral home facilities presents a unique set of challenges. These are spaces that require discretion, sensitivity, and minimal disruption. IDR’s experience in sequencing, phasing, and maintaining safe work zones allowed the team to meet these needs while keeping the project on schedule.
In busy urban settings, IDR also navigated logistical challenges such as concrete cutting, reinforcing, and staging equipment in constrained spaces. Their ability to solve unforeseen structural issues without derailing the project timeline was key to maintaining momentum and client confidence.

The Outcome: Trusted Results, Project After Project
IDR’s attention to detail, client-focused service, and deep understanding of complex commercial renovations were instrumental in Burquitlam Funeral Home’s growth. Our partnership stands as a testament to what organizations can achieve through long-term collaboration, clear communication, and expert execution.
As IDR continues to grow, this project exemplifies how the company brings value to Canadian businesses through strategic Construction Management and a solutions-first approach, no matter how complex the build.
